Baseball: Trio Earns All-East Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three West Virginia University athletes were named to the 2003 ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association)/Rawlings All-East Region Team, announced recently.
Sophomore lefthanded pitcher Zac Cline, senior third baseman Tim McCabe and junior centerfielder Jarod Rine were named to the 13-member All-East first team.
Cline led the Mountaineers with a 12-3 record. The Union City, Pa., resident posted a 3.44 earned run average with 101 strikeouts in a school-record 125.2 innings pitched. Opponents batted just .263 against Cline this year.

Rine, the Big East player of the year, batted .403 with nine home runs, 34 RBI and swiped a perfect 14-of-14 bases as West Virginia’s leadoff hitter. The junior also had an impressive .624 slugging percentage to go with a soliud .459 on-base percentage. Rine also led the team with 10 sacrifice hits.
The Moundsville native was picked in the ninth round of the Major League draft (first Big East player picked) and is currently playing for Aberdeen, Md., in the Baltimore Orioles organization.

McCabe finished his career as the school’s all-time home run leader with 35 and became the first player in school history with three straight 10-plus home run seasons. This year the Wexford, Pa., native smacked 11 home runs, drove in 43 runs and hit .344.
The trio helped West Virginia to a 36-19 overall record and a second-place finish in the Big East with an 18-4 conference mark.
