Mike Seabolt has been named interim head coach of the men's soccer program at West Virginia University, director of athletics Ed Pastilong announced today.
A former Mountaineer assistant, Seabolt replaces Keith Fulk, who took an assistant coaching position with the USA Soccer U-17 team.
"I have prepared myself to become a head coach. It has been my goal to become a coach at this high of a level," said Seabolt. "We are putting a solid team together to move forward. I am excited the university is prepared to head in the same direction we started last year. This is a challenge I except as we prepare to make West Virginia soccer a top 25 program."
A year ago, Seabolt served as the Mountaineer's top assistant whose duties included recruiting, training of the team, game analysis and game day activities.
Prior to arriving in Morgantown, Seabolt spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Tampa and helped the Spartans to the 2001 Division II national championship. He managed the scheduling, team training and match preparations while guiding the Spartans to a two-year record of 33-4-2.
In the offseasons at Tampa, Seabolt was an assistant coach with the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer (MLS). There he was involved with scouting and drafting players as well as all other aspects of coaching the MLS team. Seabolt also served as the head coach of the Boulder Rapids Reserve Team, the amateur development arm of the United Soccer League. Building a team from scratch, he coached the team to a 12-4-4 record and national runner-up finish.
Prior to working with the Rapids, he was a volunteer assistant with the Tampa Bay Mutiny in the MLS during the 2000 season. As an assistant, Seabolt was involved with match preparation, opponent and player scouting, match analysis and team administration duties.
Since 2000, Seabolt has also served as an assistant coach for the United States Men’s Soccer National Amateur Team which competes against the U.S. U-17 team and MLS teams in pre-season. Seabolt holds a United States Soccer Federation "B" license.
In 1999-2000, Seabolt was an assistant coach at Elon College. From 1997-98, he was the head coach and also a player for the Duke University club team.
Seabolt, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, earned a law degree from Duke University after graduating from Trinity University with a bachelor’s degree in political science while playing soccer.
