Founded: Zackquill Morgan settled at the confluence of Dent's Run and the Monongahela River in 1772. The Virginia General Assembly granted Morgan's petition to found Morgan's Town in 1785. Economy: West Virginia University was founded in 1867 and has been the major influence on the area's economy ever since. Coal has asserted the next greatest influence upon the region, although its impact has begun to wane in recent years. Location: Located on the banks of the Monongahela River near the intersection of I-79 and I-68 in the Northeast portion of the state. State routes 7, 19 and 119 intersect within the city limits. The Pennsylvania state line is eight miles to the north and the Maryland state line is 36 miles to the east.
Statistics: The city covers 8.4 square miles and has a year-round population of 26,809, which expands to over 45,000 when WVU is in session. The city is located in Monongalia County, which covers 369 square miles and has a population of 81,866. Airport: Morgantown Municipal Airport is located in the Northeastern section of the city, about two miles from the stadium. The airport is served by USAirways Express. Avis, Hertz and National operate car rental offices from the terminal. The airport operates a full-service fixed base operation.
