Bahneman’s team fired a 12-under-par 58 to tie the team of Jay Jacobs, Larry Boggs, Dave Ferette, Greg Mellors and Andy Southworth.
The Jacobs team birdied three of its final four holes to force a playoff.
With the playoff beginning on the first hole, Bahneman positioned his five-some just 60 yards from the green with his tee shot. McCullough then nearly holed his approach shot, leaving the ball just seven feet above the pin. McCullough also nailed the putt to win the tournament.
Jacobs’ team finished the hole with a par.
The first place finish in the Classic was the third for both Bahneman and Keys.
“I was concerned when we made par on the last two holes but it all held up and worked out well in the end,” said Bahneman, a WVU professor and vice chair of the Athletic Council. “Denver made some putts today that were just fantastic and Howard, Kevin and Bill were steady all day.”
The team captained by WVU Sports Marketing Director Brad Howe edged the team captained by gymnastics coach Linda Burdette for third place on a tie breaker. Both teams shot a nine-under-par 61.
Prior to the golf tournament in a light rain, Jay Cipoletti won the long drive contest with a drive of 291 yards. Mountaineer football coach Rich Rodriguez kicked the long drive contest off with a mammoth drive of 293 yards.
Twenty two teams of five played in this year’s WVU Classic. All proceeds for the golf tournament go to help fund West Virginia University’s Athletic Endowment Fund (AEF).
