The 2003-04 schedule features 15 teams that reached postseason play last season, including nine teams that played in the NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers will play eight games at home against teams that reached postseason play last year, including defending national champion Syracuse and NIT finalists, St. John’s and Georgetown.
The BIG EAST will discontinue the two-division format (East and West) beginning this season. Thus, the Mountaineers will play every BIG EAST team once in 2003-04 and three teams twice.
West Virginia will play 13 games in the WVU Coliseum: Boston College, Georgetown, Pitt, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Syracuse, Villanova, Virginia Tech, Duquesne, IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), Howard, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne) and Northeastern.
The Mountaineers will play road games at Connecticut, Miami, Notre Dame, Providence, Rutgers, St. John’s, Villanova, Virginia Tech and James Madison.
West Virginia will play five neutral site contests. The Mountaineers will play two games in Charleston, against Saint Louis and Marshall. WVU will face Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic in Miami, and play two games in the BB&T Classic in Washington, D.C., against either Maryland, Gonzaga or George Washington.
The complete schedule with dates will be announced in September.
