MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University second baseman Eric Grimm has signed a free agent contract with the Baltimore Orioles, the Parkersburg News and Sentinel reported Friday.
Grimm, a Parkersburg native, hit .316 with 10 home runs and a team-leading 55 RBI to help the Mountaineers to a 36-19 record and a second-place finish in the Big East.
The six-foot, 190-pound senior is to report to Baltimore’s rookie league team in Aberdeen, Md., Friday morning.
“I thought it was going to happen so I tried to keep myself ready,” Grimm said. “I have been working out and taking the necessary swings and doing the things I need to be doing if it did happen.”
Grimm joins WVU teammate Jarod Rine, who recently signed with the Orioles after being drafted in the ninth round two weeks ago.
Rine and pitcher Jason DiAngelo (27th round Colorado) were selected in the 2003 Major League draft.
