Track: Metcalfe Makes Final

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – West Virginia University sophomore Megan Metcalfe advanced to the finals of the women’s 1,500-meter run Thursday night at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Sacramento State University.
Metcalfe finished fifth in her heat with a time of 4:13.97, becoming one of 12 qualifiers for Saturday’s final race to take place Saturday night at 7:40 p.m. local time. If Metcalfe can finish in the top eight she will earn All-America honors.
Arkansas senior Christin Wurth won Metcalfe’s heat with a time of 4:13.18. The top time was posted by Mississippi State’s Tiffany McWilliams in the first heat with a 4:10.60 clocking. She was just two seconds shy of Suzy Favor’s NCAA Championship record of 4:08.26 set in 1990.
Earlier Thursday, sophomore Jennifer Kemp failed to advance to Saturday’s finals of the women’s 800-meter run. Kemp finished sixth in her heat with a time of 2:05.54. The top eight runners in both heats advance to the finals.
And sophomore Tara Struyk finished 14th in the women’s 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:33.61. Stanford freshman Alicia Craig won the race with a time of 32:40.03.
Struyk was coming off the women’s 5,000-meter race Wednesday night.
