MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has recognized West Virginia University's wrestling team and individuals Shane Cunanan and Brandon Lauer for their excellence in the classroom.
West Virginia had a team GPA of 2.97, good for 18th in the nation among all Division I programs. This is the second consecutive season that the Mountaineers have finished in the top 20 academically and at the NCAA tournament (17th).
The team's grade point average is compiled by averaging the 10 starters and two other wrestlers who saw action in a varsity match during the season.
Cunanan and Lauer, NCAA All-Americans, were cited as honorable mentions to the all-academic teams. Cunanan, a native of Spokane, Wash., holds a 3.13 GPA majoring in physical education teaching while Lauer, a native of Highland, Md., maintains a 3.20 GPA in physical education teaching.
