MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rowers Kate Abernethy, Tiffany Sizemore and Kirsten Leslie have been named College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) national scholar-athletes while teammate Risha Kelley was recently named to the CRCA second team all-mid Atlantic region.
Abernethy, a Princeton, N.J., native, graduated with a 4.0 GPA in elementary education and was also named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-American District II women's at-large first team.
Sizemore, a Clay, W.Va., native, graduated with a 3.97 GPA in environmental geoscience, while Leslie, a Sydney, Australia, native, posted a 3.7 GPA in sport management.
"We pride ourselves on our athletes working as hard in the classroom as they do on the water," said coach Nancy LaRocque. "These ladies are great representatives of the West Virginia women's rowing program."
Kelley, a Fairmont, W.Va., native, became the first WVU rower to earn CRCA all-region honors in the program's three year history.
"This is a great honor for Risha to be named to a list of the best collegiate rowers in the nation," says LaRocque. "She has been an instrumental part of putting WVU on the map in the sport of rowing."
