MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- For the second consecutive season, Mountaineer gymnast Amanda Halovanic has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District II women's at-large first team. She is joined by Mountaineer crew member, Kate Abernethy.
They are now on the ballot for the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America women's at-large team that is scheduled to be announced Thursday, June 12.
Both seniors, Halovanic, a Grove City, Pa., native, has a 3.97 GPA in marketing and finance while Abernethy, a Princeton, N.J., native, has a 4.0 GPA in elementary education.
Last season, Halovanic, the 2003 East Atlantic Gymnastics League scholar athlete of year, was named to the Verizon Academic All-American national third team.
The District II University Division consists of all NCAA Division I college and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on her team.
West Virginia and Rutgers are the only two schools that placed two student-athletes each on the all-district first team.
