MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Mike Barwis has been named director of strength and conditioning at West Virginia University, supervising the entire strength program for Mountaineer athletes.
Barwis will now work primarily with Mountaineer football and men's basketball, after serving as WVU's director of strength and conditioning for varsity sports. Former football strength coach Doug Elias resigned this week for another opportunity in Florida.
"We're very excited about Mike coordinating our strength and conditioning efforts and working with our football student-athletes," says WVU football coach Rich Rodriguez. "He's done a great job with the sports and athletes he's worked with in the past, and he has experience in working with elite football athletes as well. He'll do a great job."
Barwis has been part of the WVU strength program for 11 years, coordinating workouts for basketball, soccer, gymnastics, wrestling, volleyball, tennis, track, rowing, swimming and diving. Designing and implementing year-round comprehensive, individualized sport specific strength and conditioning programs, Barwis has coached 10 National Strength and Conditioning (NSCA) All Americans since 1999, and was one of just 10 strength coaches to receive the 2002 Bronze Award from the NSCA certification commission.
Over the course of his career, he has trained professional, Olympic, national and international competitors and medalists in wrestling, track and field, soccer, football, basketball, baseball, motor cross, cycling and rifle.
Barwis, a Philadelphia native and an adjunct professor with the WVU School of Physical Education, earned his undergraduate degree in exercise physiology from WVU in 1996 and his master's from WVU in athletic coaching in 1998. He has also completed course work in the area of anatomy, physiology, histology and biomechanics at Temple, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the NSCA.
Jim Nowell will continue as director of skill development at football and Autumn Speck and John McCallister will remain as assistant strength coaches.
