CAMDEN, N.J. - The West Virginia University women’s rowing team finished its season with a pair of regattas this past weekend. On Saturday, May 10, the Mountaineers raced in the Dad Vails and on Sunday, May 11, they participated in the ECAC Metro Cup.
At the Dad Vails, the Mountaineers finished fourth in semifinals of the novice eight and four races. West Virginia also finished third in the grand finals of both the varsity and JV eight races. This is the first time in the program’s history in which the novice team made it past the preliminary heats and the first time two boats received medals.
At the Metro Cup, the novice eight came in sixth in the grand final and the varsity four placed first in the petite final. The JV and varsity eight both finished third in their respective races.
"We are extremely happy with the results of these last two regattas as well as the whole season,” said coach Nancy LaRocque. “We have come away with more medals and trophies this season than all of the previous years combined. But more important than that, we have built a solid foundation for the program as a whole. The future for West Virginia University Women's Rowing is bright.”
“It is a great compliment to our program when the weaker teams fear us and fast teams want to race us,” said assistant coach Jim Mitchell. “That is what is happening for the WVU Rowing program.”
