MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia faces Villanova Sunday afternoon knowing it is now in first place in the Big East.
The Mountaineers (31-14, 14-4) got back into first place after Rutgers and Notre Dame split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Piscataway. Notre Dame took the first game, 2-0 before dropping the nightcap, 10-2. The two teams will complete the three-game series Sunday at noon.
West Virginia’s .777 winning percentage is just a shade better than Rutgers’ mark of .762. Notre Dame is third with a .750 winning percentage.
In other Big East action, fourth-place Virginia Tech and Pitt split a doubleheader. The Hokies, now 14-8 in conference play, won the first game, 4-3 before dropping the second, 14-13.
Boston College is trying catch Virginia Tech for fourth place and the final Big East tournament spot. The Eagles split a doubleheader at St. John’s Saturday, winning the first game, 3-2 and losing the second, 13-0. The Eagles are in fifth place in the league standings with an 11-9 record.
Pitt’s postseason hopes are fading with an 11-11 conference mark. St. John’s dropped out of postseason contention with Saturday’s loss to Boston College and shows a 10-12 league record.
Seton Hall (9-13), Connecticut (8-14), Villanova (5-14) and Georgetown (4-22) were all idle.
Rutgers, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Boston College each have four conference games remaining.
West Virginia plays a doubleheader against Villanova beginning at 1 p.m. The two teams will wrap up the series Monday at 1 p.m. WAJR (1440 AM) and U-92 (91.7 FM) will broadcast both games Sunday. U-92 will also carry Monday’s game and all three games will be carried live on the Internet at MSNsportsNET.com.
