MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women's rowing team will travel to Worcester, Mass., on Sunday, April 27, for the BIG EAST Rowing Challenge on Lake Quinsigamond. The first race begins at 8:10 a.m.
West Virginia is led by its varsity eight boat which is tied in the United States Rowing poll for No.24 with conference rival Notre Dame. In the ECAC/ Metro poll the Mountaineers are ranked first.
"Although we have had a very strong schedule all season, this weekend could be the toughest," said coach Nancy LaRocque. "There are only nine schools in the Big East championships, but they are all very competitive including No.16 Syracuse and No. 24 Notre Dame. We are ready for the challenge, though, as they have been at every competition."
West Virginia will be racing in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and second novice eight events. Teams participating in the championship include defending team champion Syracuse, Boston College, Connecticut, Georgetown, Miami, Notre Dame, Rutgers and Villanova.
"The program as a whole has really stepped up this year; all four boats are faster than they have ever been since the program's inception," said assistant coach Jim Mitchell. "We are going into this race with the goal of finishing higher as a team than the Mountaineers have ever finished in the BIG EAST."
