MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia avenged a shutout loss to the Maryland Terrapins in a big way putting 21 runs on the scoreboard and racking up 17 hits in a 21-8 win on a blustery Tuesday afternoon at Hawley Field.
Kurtis Clinton was the main source of power for WVU going 5-6 with two home runs, four runs scored and five RBI. Clinton became just the 20th player in WVU history to collect five hits in a game. Clinton was a perfect 5-5 before going down on strikes in his last at-bat.
Clinton's 11 home runs this season is 10th-best all-time for a Mountaineer in a single season.
WVU jumped on the Terrapins early with six runs in the first frame. After a pair of walks to open the game, Tim McCabe hit an RBI single to left field. Jake Serfass then blasted a three-run homer and Stan Posluszny followed with an opposite field home run after Clinton's single.
Posluszny had the first three-hit game of his career going 3-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
The Mountaineers tacked on four runs in the third highlighted by Jarod Rine's two run single to right field. Rine finished the game with 2-4 with four RBI.
Clinton's three-run homer in the fourth inning stretched the lead to 13-2. Eric Grimm hit his eighth home run of the season with a three-run shot of his own in the sixth inning. Grimm finished the game 2-4 with four RBI.
Justin Asbury (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for WVU. Asbury came on in relief of starter Chris Amedro and pitched 2.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits with a walk and no strikeouts. Ryan Lipscomb finished the game with two scoreless innings allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out five.
The Mountaineers (27-11) return to action this weekend for a three-game series against St. John's. West Virginia has swept its last three conference series (Connecticut, Virginia Tech and Georgetown) and is tied for first place in the BIG EAST with Notre Dame at 10-2 in league play.
