MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University track team had a successful weekend of competition at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., held Thursday, April 16, through Saturday, April 19.
A top performance was turned in by Christine Brown, who won the triple jump at 12.46m, which qualifies her to attend the NCAA regional meet.
The men's 4x100m relay, which consisted of William White, Dwayne Grant-Higgins, Dwayne Vaughn and Abraham Jones, placed fourth in 40.85 seconds.
Other top finishers for the Mountaineers included: Brandon Howard, who was eighth in the invitational long jump at 7.11m; Marc Kellman, who was eighth in the open triple jump at 15.15m and Jones, who was ninth in the open long jump at 7.12m. Kellman's triple jump effort was good enough to qualify him for the NCAA regionals.
In addition, several members of the team attended the University of Charleston Invitational in Charleston, W.Va., and five athletes tallied first place finishes.
On the track, Tyler DeVault won the 1,500m run in 3:56.12, Tara Struyk won the 3,000m run in 9:50.30 and Megan Metcalfe won the 5,000m run in 16:44.50.
In the field, Mike Yurcho won the pole vault and Michele McGinnis won the discus throw.
Struyk's and Metcalfe's times were both stadium records and Metcalfe's time was good enough for NCAA regional qualification.
"I am really proud of the kids we took to Mt. SAC and Charleston, especially the men," said head coach Jeff Huntoon. "The way that they competed really made me proud. They know that they still have a job to do and are going to do it to the best of their ability."
The Mountaineers return to action at the Penn Relays, which are set for Wednesday, April 23, through Saturday, April 26.
