MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - For the first time since the program began three years ago, the West Virginia University women's rowing varsity eight has cracked the national rankings. According to United States Rowing, the Mountaineers are ranked No.25 in the country.
"Only being in our third year of existence as a varsity sport, it is great to already be breaking into the polls" says coach Nancy LaRocque. "It shows that other coaches are starting to give us some respect and see that we have something good building here on the Mon river."
On Saturday, April 19, the Mountaineers will travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the 36th Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship Regatta.
The Mountaineers will participate in four events that include the varsity eight, JV eight, novice eight, and second novice eight. After three races, the varsity eight is undefeated. This will be the second race for the other three boats.
"This will be another tough week of competition for all four boats", said LaRocque. "Every boat has been working very hard in practice during the early morning hours and are ready for all challenges"
Members of the nationally ranked varsity eight are Donna Stullken, Gaetanne De LaBourdonnaye, Kirsten Leslie, Erin Nisbet, Kate Abernethy, Amelia Payne, Risha Kelley, Tina Griffith, and coxswain Laura Goren.
