MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four West Virginia University gymnasts travel to Athens, Ga., to compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by Georgia, Saturday, April 12, at 7:00 p.m.
WVU (15-12) did not qualify as a team for the first time in 21 seasons for the regional event, but seniors Dinorh Boyd, Amanda Halovanic, TeShawne Jackson and sophomore Kari Williams all had excellent regional qualifying scores (RQS) during the season to advance them to the post season competition.
Boyd, a Mount Holly, N.J., native, will compete on balance beam and floor exercise after posting a 9.895 RQS on beam and a 9.905 on floor during the season. She won the 2003 EAGL Championships on floor and beam and ranks fifth and sixth on balance beam and floor exercise, respectively, in the Southeast Region.
Halovanic earned the right to go to Georgia as an all-around competitor with a 38.945 all-around RQS which ranks her 16th in the region. The 2003 EAGL Scholar Athlete of the Year from Grove City, Pa., posted three 39.0 or higher all-around scores on the year with four top five finishes.
Jackson, a Summerville, S.C., native, also qualified as an all-around competitor with a 39.020 RQS, good for 14th in the region. The all-EAGL first team vault and floor performer was also named to the conference's all-around second team. She ranks third in the region with a 9.91 vault RQS and 10th on floor exercise with a 9.885 RQS. She recorded her WVU-best seventh perfect 10.0 of her career on floor earlier this season against Florida, New Hampshire, Cornell and Yale. It was her third perfect floor performance.
Williams, a Newark, Del., native, qualifies for the regional on vault with a 9.855 RQS on the apparatus. She scored a career-best 9.925 against Florida, New Hampshire, Cornell and Yale earlier this season and did not score lower than a 9.75 all season.
