MONROEVILLE, Pa.– West Virginia claimed the doubles point and won four of six singles matches to defeat Duquesne, 5-2 Sunday afternoon in Monroeville, Pa.
The Mountaineers swept all three doubles matches by scores of 8-2, and the top of the lineup was solid for the second straight day. Eric Kochanski defeated Duquesne’s Seth Fogelman, 6-1, 6-1 to win at No. 1 singles, and Tony Epkey downed Michael Lopez, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
“Eric and Tony are just getting better and better at the top of our lineup,” said West Virginia coach Ed Dickson.
West Virginia also got victories from Chris Green at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4 over Ryan Moseley, and from Kyle Markham at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-3 over Rob Ojeda. The victory is the fifth straight for the Mountaineers, now 6-5 on the season.
“It’s hard to come back the day after a tough match at Maryland, but I was pleased with the fact that we won the doubles point and did what we needed to do to get the victory,” said Dickson.
West Virginia returns to the courts on Tuesday, March 18, at The Citadel.
