Baseball: Mountaineers Fall in Nightcap

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Stony Brook got a pair of three-run home runs by Mike Russo and Matt Devins to defeat West Virginia, 11-9 in the nightcap of Sunday’s doubleheader at Bowen Stadium in Bluefield, W.Va.
Stony Brook batters pounded out 15 hits against seven West Virginia pitchers.
Starter Todd Dunham went four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, with seven strike outs and no walks to lose his first decision of the season. Russo and Devins combined to drive in nine of Stony Brook’s 11 runs.
West Virginia’s Tim McCabe went three for four with a home run and two RBI. Eric Grim also smacked a home run and Lee Fritz went two for five with a double and an RBI.
West Virginia collected eight hits for the game.
The Mountaineers drop to 5-5 with the loss. Stony Brook improves to 1-2.
West Virginia returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 11 against Niagara at Hawley Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
