BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Jarod Rine’s RBI double in the sixth inning lifted West Virginia to a 3-2 victory over Stony Brook in the first of two Sunday afternoon at Bowen Field in Bluefield, W.Va.
With the scored tied at two, Eric Grimm led off the sixth with a walk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Casey Bowling and eventually scored on Rine’s two-out double.
Pitcher Jason DiAngelo was able to blank the Seawolves in the seventh to pick up his first victory of the season (1-2). DiAngelos struck out a season-high 11, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks.
Tim McCabe hit a solo home run in the fourth and Derek Cisar singled in a run in the fifth for West Virginia’s other two runs.
Stony Brook, now 0-2, plated two runs in the top of the first.
Lee Fritz led the Mountaineers with three hits. Cisar added a pair of hits.
West Virginia boosted its overall record to 5-4.
