Wrestling: WVU Leads After Day One

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia Mountaineers took the lead after the first round of the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) tournament, holding a narrow 47.50-47.00 lead over Edinboro after the championship quarterfinals.
Eight WVU wrestlers remain alive in the championship bracket.
West Virginia scored bonus points in several matches to take the lead. WVU used a pin by Matt Lebe (157), a technical fall from Greg Jones (174) and major decisions from Seth Lisa (125), Shane Cunanan (141), Tom McMath (165) and Brent Miller (HWT) to hold the narrow margin. Brandon Lauer (133) advanced with a hard-fought 12-7 win over Lock Haven's Justin Owens and Billy Smith (149) edged the Bald Eagles' James LaValle, 2-0.
Ryan Wilman (184) lost a tough 3-1 decision to Mike Greenburg of Lock Haven and Adrian Thompson (197) lost 11-2 to Clarion's Eric Mausser. Wilman and Thompson are still alive in the double-elimination tournament.
Session II of the EWL championships will begin tomorrow morning with the consolation quarterfinals and the championships semifinals taking place at 10:30 a.m.
