FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - West Virginia University runner Megan Metcalfe took fourth place in the 3,000 meters in 9:10.35, at the NCAA indoor track and field championships, held at the Randal Tyson Track Center, on the campus of Arkansas.
Metcalfe, a junior, came very close to her personal best and school record of 9:09.95, which she set at last year's NCAA meet, where she placed third. The Edmonton, Alberta native collected her fifth All-American citation with this finish. Going into the race, she was the No. 13 seed.
No. 1 seed Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina won the race in 9:01.05.
Of the five women in this race hailing from the BIG EAST, Metcalfe fared the best. Her closest competition from the conference was Molly Huddle of Notre Dame, who finished ninth in 9:20.30.
"Megan should be very proud," says coach Jeff Huntoon of Metcalfe's 3,000 finish. "This race was a wonderful cap to a phenomenal indoor season and she ran very well last night on the DMR as well."
The Mountaineers finished 17th in the team competition with 10 points, which is believed to be the best finish of a WVU women's team at an NCAA indoor championship. Louisiana State won with 62 points. In BIG EAST action, Miami placed 14th with 14 points, Georgetown came in 27th with six points and Providence and Notre Dame tied with five points in 32nd place.

This meet concludes West Virginia's indoor track season.
The Mountaineers return to action for their first outdoor meet of the season at the Alabama Relays at Sam Bailey Stadium, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on March 20-23.
