MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Eric Grimm, Travis D'Amico and Grant Psomas each smashed two-run home runs to lead West Virginia to a 12-3 victory over LeMoyne Friday night in the home opener for WVU.
Lefty Zac Cline (3-1) went seven innings allowing three runs on five hits with six walks and seven strikeouts to register the victory.
D'Amico got the scoring started in the second inning with his blast to left field that scored Casey Bowling who had singled. In the third, Tim McCabe's double that scored Lee Fritz was followed by Psomas' two-run drive to put WVU up 5-0.
In the top of the third, the Dolphins looked to get back into the game after three consecutive walks by Cline. However, the southpaw was able to work his way out the jam recording a fly out, a strikeout and a groundout to end the scoring threat.
Grimm extended the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the inning with his home run that scored Derek Cisar who had singled.
WVU put the game well out of reach with five more in a wild sixth inning that saw 10 Mountaineer batters come to the plate and two Dolphin pitching changes.
D'Amico finished the game 2-3 with three RBI. Lee Fritz, Cisar and Bowling also tacked on two hits apiece for the Mountaineers.
Justin Asbury finished off LeMoyne with two scoreless innings of relief on the mound.
WVU (6-5) and LeMoyne (1-7) will resume its four-game series with a double-header tomorrow at Hawley Field. The Mountaineers and Dolphins will play two seven-inning games beginning at 1 p.m.
