MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - For the 23rd consecutive year, the West Virginia rifle team will compete in the 2003 NCAA rifle championships on March 14-15 at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Range in West Point, N.Y.
The Mountaineers and Murray State are the only two teams in the country who have qualified for the tournament every year since it began in 1980.
Individual competitions will be held on Friday, March 14, and feature 48 competitors. Junior Nicole Allaire will represent WVU in both the smallbore and air rifle events and junior Jon Hammond will compete in smallbore.
The team competition will take place on Saturday, March 15. Allaire, Hammond, freshman Brian Launer and senior Wade Tyner will compete in the team smallbore championship. West Virginia failed to qualify for the smallbore championship by six points.
The Mountaineers have the most NCAA rifle championships with 13. Defending champion Alaska-Fairbanks is second with four. Last year, West Virginia finished seventh.
The overall team championship is determined by combining the smallbore and air rifle team totals into one aggregate score.
