BLACKSBURG, Va. – Chrystal Starling and Ieva Kublina scored 18 points each to lead Virginia Tech to a 76-64 victory over West Virginia Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Hokies, now 18-8, 9-6.
Tech had a 10-point lead at halftime and never trailed in the game. After building a 16-point lead, West Virginia cut the margin to 10 on a short jumper by Yolanda Paige with 9:45 left.
But Tech went on a 14-2 run after that to put the game away.
The Hokies made 30 of 60 field goal attempts for 50 percent and forced 17 Mountaineer turnovers.
West Virginia (15-11, 4-11) was led by Yolanda Paige’s 18 points. Latitia Williams scored 15 and Kate Bulger added 12.
The loss snaps West Virginia’s modest two-game win streak. The Mountaineers still appear to have a beat on a Big East tournament spot following Providence’s loss Saturday to Connecticut.
West Virginia is fighting Providence and Pittsburgh for one of the final Big East tournament spots. Pitt is at Syracuse tonight.
West Virginia completes its regular season on Tuesday, March 4 at No. 1-ranked Connecticut.
