Gymnastics: WVU Sweeps Rhode Island, Temple

Kingston, R.I. -- The West Virginia Unviersity gymnastics team (8-5) swept Rhode Island and Temple Saturday afternoon at Mackal Field House scoring a 191.9.
Rhode Island placed second with a 190.475 while Temple finished with a 187.625.
The Mountaineers opened the meet on vault, scoring a 48.875. WVU was paced on the apparatus by senior Amanda Halovanic and junior Jessica Bartgis who both registered a career-high 9.85.
Next up for West Virginia was bars where the Mountaineers scored a 47.925 to win the apparatus. Freshman Alyssa DeSantis led the Mountaineers with a 9.75 and was followed by Bartgis who totaled a 9.7.
Forced to count three falls on floor, WVU totaled only a 46.65, but was highlighted by Halovanic's 9.75.
The Mountaineers closed out the meet on beam, scoring a 48.45. DeSantis again paced West Virginia, leading all-competitors and nailing a career-best 9.85 on beam.
The Mountaineers were forced to compete without senior co-captain TeShawne Jackson who injured her heel during practice last week.
West Virginia returns to action on Friday, March 1, at 8 p.m., against Arkansas at the WVU Coliseum.
