RAWLINGS, Md. – West Virginia swept all six singles matches and took the doubles point to defeat James Madison, 7-0 Saturday afternoon in Rawlings, Md.
“This was a real good win,” noted West Virginia coach Ed Dickson. “It’s nice to have some success at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and I think that carried over for the rest of the match.”
West Virginia (3-5) got things started right off the bat by taking the doubles point. The duo of Tony Epkey and Ian Bliss downed the James Madison pair of Colin Malcolm and John Jaussen, 8-3, and JR Randall and Kyle Markham paired up to down Mike Hendricksen and John Snead at No. 2 doubles, 8-4 to secure the point.
For good measure, West Virginia added a third victory when Eric Kochanski and Chris Green downed Craig Anderson and Bryan Kuehr, 8-6.
The momentum carried over to singles play, where the tightest match of the day came at No. 2 singles when Epkey disposed of Jaussen, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Kochanski defeated Hendrickson, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 and Bliss had a good match against Anderson at No. 3, winning 7-6 and 6-1.
Randall defeated Kuehr at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 6-3 and Julian Mesa won at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3.
Marcum wrapped up the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Malcolm.
James Madison drops to 1-5 after the loss.
“I think the way we played today was a carry over from the win we had against Florida A&M last week at Clemson,” said Dickson.
West Virginia, winners of two straight, returns to the court on Wednesday, March 5 to take on Liberty at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
