COLUMBUS, Ohio - The West Virginia University men's tennis team (1-2) topped DePaul (1-6), 4-3, for their first victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Courts.
The sophomore duo of Tony Epkey and Eric Kochanski defeated DePaul's Andy Michael and Sam Davidson in No. 1 doubles action, 8-6. Sophomore Ian Bliss and senior Chris Green secured the doubles point with a key 8-5 victory over Robert Kotroczo and Will Wong.
In singles action, Bliss defeated Wong, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 while sophomore Julian Mesa picked up his first collegiate victory over Eric Huffman at No. 6 singles.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Kyle Markham defeated DePaul's Michael Fessler, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch a Mountaineer victory in the final match of the day.
"It was really a great match right down to the wire," said coach Ed Dickson. "It came down to freshman Kyle Markham who had to win and he came through for us. Getting the doubles point always helps in close matches too."
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 15, to face Maryland-Baltimore County at 1 p.m., at the WVU Tennis Courts.
