Track: BIG EAST Day One Results

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The West Virginia University track and field team had a successful day of preliminary competition at the BIG EAST Championships, held at Syracuse University, in the Carrier Dome. The women's team is in third place with 26.5 points and the men's team is in seventh place with 16 points.
Leading the way for the women was Tara Struyk who placed second in the 5,000 meters in 16:51.31. Christine Brown finished second in the long jump with a leap of 6.21 meters, good enough for NCAA provincial qualification. The women's distance medley relay, comprised of Jennifer Davis, Pam Richardson, Ailene Smith and Megan Metcalfe, placed third in 11:26.35. Jenifer Hall placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 3.50 meters.
In the women's pentathlon, Nancy Regalbuto finished 11th with 2,802 points and Samantha O'Reilly finished 13th with 2,645 points.
The following women qualified for tomorrow's finals: Ciara Chic,60 meters; and Jennifer Kemp, 800 meters.
On the men's side, the long jumpers collected 13 points for the Mountaineers. Brandon Howard took 3rd at 7.21 meters, Abraham Jones took 4th at 7.12 meters and Marc Kellman took 7th at 7.09 meters. The men's DMR, comprised of Erik Bennett, Blake Pearson, Peter Knuchel and Nick Albanito, finished 6th in 10:08.69. Zach Sabatino finished 10th in the 3,000 meters in 14:55.02.
In the men's pentathlon, Adam Golembeski finished 10th with 3,356 points and Paul Schwab finished 13th with 3,095 points.
The following men qualified for tomorrow's finals: William White, 60 and 200 meters; Knuchel,1,000 meters and Dwayne Grant-Higgins, 60 meter hurdles.
"We're actually a few points ahead of where I thought we would be after the first day of competition," says coach Jeff Huntoon. "The kids are competing very well and moving in the right direction, despite a cold bug that got some of them on the bus trip."
The Mountaineers will compete in the final events of the BIG EAST Championships tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 23, beginning at 10:25 a.m.
