WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore southpaw Zac Cline tossed a complete game and issued no walks to lead the WVU baseball squad (1-2) to their first victory of the season over Fordham (0-2), 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Brooks Field.
Cline (1-0) allowed just one unearned run in the second inning and scattered five Rams hits to keep their offense in check, while striking out three.
Down 1-0 in the third, senior Eric Grimm roped an RBI single that plated sophomore Travis D'Amico, who singled and was advanced to second after a Jarod Rine walk.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Rine reached base with a two-out single, then stole second and advanced to third on an error. Sophomore Grant Psomas laid down a bunt single down the third base line that scored Rine to give WVU a 2-1 lead.
Junior Kurtis Clinton gave West Virginia an insurance run with a solo home run over the left field wall in the sixth inning.
Fordham starter John Baco tossed three innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out one and walking two. Rams reliever Andrew Paolillo (0-1) picked up the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in three innings pitched.
The Mountaineers return to action with two games at Brooks Field on Sunday, Feb. 23, starting with a 10 a.m., contest against Fordham. WVU wraps up the weekend versus host UNC-Wilmington at 1:30 p.m.
