Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team (1-5) fell to No.30 Alabama (7-1), 6-1, this afternoon at UA Varsity Outdoor Courts in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Junior Jennifer Watkins won the Mountaineers lone singles match by default at the No. 5 spot over Natalie McElveen.
Despite winning her first set, freshman Catherine Koontz was unable to hang on to Nathalie Koppelle and lost the tiebreaker.
Watkins teamed up with senior Anna Marie Underwood to defeat Sophie Cremers and McElveen in doubles action. The Mountaineer pair is 5-2 on the year.
The Alabama duo of Millie Begovic and Robin Stephenson, who defeated WVU freshmen Melissa Day and Raynie Theis, are currently ranked No. 38 in the nation.
"We played hard today," said coach Dan Silverstein. "The women played well and gave it there all against such a tough team. We are now looking forward to our match tomorrow against Auburn."
The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow when they play No.31 Auburn (6-1) at the Luther Young Tennis Complex. The first serve is set for 2 p.m.
