MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University track team has eight athletes included in the top three of their events in the BIG EAST individual rankings that were released yesterday.
Leading the way for the Mountaineers is junior William White in the 60 meter dash at 6.74 seconds, his fourth consecutive week in first place. The Newport News, Va., native's closest competition is Marvin Regis of Seton Hall at 6.86 seconds.
"There's a lot on him to succeed, but I think that he'll more than rise to the challenge," says coach Jeff Huntoon of pressure.
"There are about five guys that have the chance to win it and he's one of them."
Mountaineers ranked in second place in the BIG EAST are: Christine Brown in the triple jump at 12.86 meters, Marc Kellman in the triple jump at 15.42 meters, and Justin Willyoung in the high jump at 2.11 meters.
In third place are: Brown in the long jump at 5.92 meters, Ciara Chic in the 60 meters at 7.54 seconds, returning BIG EAST champion Megan Metcalfe in the 3,000 meters at 9:17.54, Dwayne Grant-Higgins in the 60 meter hurdles at 8.03 seconds, and Peter Knuchel in the 1,000 meters at 2:26.55.
"With these athletes leading in their events, we plan to score some points and hopefully place each team in the top 5 or top half of the conference," says Huntoon.
The Mountaineers travel to University Park, Pa., on Feb. 14-15, for the Collegiate Cup Challenge, hosted by Penn State at the Ashenfelter Track, with events beginning at 5 p.m.
