MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University women's tennis coach Dan Silverstein has announced the signing of recruits Stacey Percival and Kate Williams during the early signing period for the 2005 season.
Percival, a native of Aiken, S.C., was the No. 1 seed in every match of her high school career and led Aiken High to the 2003 Region 4-A tennis title. Percival was voted the team's MVP and was named to the South Carolina all-state tennis team for four consecutive seasons. The two-time Region 4-A player of the year was also named the 2001 Augusta Chronicle high school girl's tennis player of the year. Percival currently boasts a 3.33 GPA in an honor curriculum and plans to major in elementary education at WVU.
"Stacey is an outstanding singles player and has proven that she has a knack for being an excellent team leader," Silverstein says. "She brings a load of credentials with her to West Virginia and we are really looking forward to having her in our lineup."
A Western Springs, Ill., native, Kate Williams comes to West Virginia as one of most heralded doubles players in the state of Illinois. During her tenure at Lyons Township High, she and her doubles partner formed a duo that was ranked among the best 200 teams in the nation. As an U-14 player, her doubles squad was recognized as the 14th ranked team in the nation. On the U-16 circuit, her doubles team was the No. 1 ranked team in the Midwest. Williams has also proven that she can be a force in singles play. As an U-16 competitor, she was tagged as one of the 75 best singles players in the Midwest.
"Kate has proven that she is one of the best doubles players in the country," Silverstein explains. "We feel that she can make an immediate impact on our doubles lineup and will add to our outstanding depth we are looking to develop on the singles side."
As a whole, Silverstein believes both Percival and Williams have the ability to make a major impact right away, with both being integral keys to the Mountaineer's future success on the hard court.
"We are really excited to be welcoming such great athletes and great people into the Mountaineer family," he says. "These are the type of players that we are looking to build our foundation upon. We feel that these girls will be a major key to taking our program to the next level."
