PROVIDENCE - Rutgers running back Brian Leonard has been named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced. Miami's D.J. Williams and West Virginia's Adam Jones share defensive honors, while the Mountaineers' Lance Frazier was chosen as Special Teams Player of the Week.
Leonard (Gouverneur, N.Y.) finished the game with 183 all-purpose yards to lead Rutgers to a 24-7 victory over Syracuse. The redshirt freshman running back ran for 134 yards on 37 carries, as the Knights ended their season with a win for the first time since 1992. He was also RU's leading receiver with six catches for 45 yards and scored one touchdown. It marked the fifth straight game he has surpassed the 100-yard plateau for all-purpose yardage. He is sixth in the BIG EAST in that category with 114.0 yards per game.
Williams (Pittsburg, Calif.) led the Miami defense in the Hurricanes' 28-14 win at Pittsburgh. The senior linebacker recorded three sacks for 20 yards, while finishing with five tackles for loss (21 yards). He had nine tackles (five solo) overall, as UM limited the Panthers to 232 total yards.
Jones (College Park, Ga.) scored his third different type of touchdown this season in West Virginia's 45-28 victory over Temple. The sophomore cornerback recovered a fumble and returned it 47 yards to open the Mountaineer scoring. He has also scored on interception and kickoff returns in 2003. Jones also had a 28-yard interception return against TU, while adding six tackles (five solo) and two pass break-ups. This is the second time this season Jones has won defensive honors.
Frazier (Delray Beach, Fla.) wins special teams accolades after returning a punt 64 yards for a touchdown in the Mountaineer victory. The senior recorded the first TD of his career in the first quarter to give WVU a 14-0 advantage. The return marked the first time a West Virginia player had returned a punt for a score since 1999 (Antonio Brown). Frazier is the 13th different Mountaineer to score this season.
