MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia entered the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll for the first time this season.
The Mountaineers are ranked No. 24 in this week’s rankings released Sunday. WVU cracked the AP poll last week at No. 24.
West Virginia (8-4) has won seven straight games to move into the Top 25. Pitt and Virginia Tech, two Big East teams that were ranked ahead of the Mountaineers last week, fell out of this week’s poll. The only other Big East team in the rankings is No. 15 Miami, which beat Pitt, 28-14 yesterday in Pittsburgh.
West Virginia’s likely bowl opponent Maryland is ranked No. 25. The Terps accepted a Gator Bowl invitation last week and the bowl is expected to officially invite West Virginia when the BCS releases the Mountaineers.
West Virginia finished tied with Miami for the Big East championship but the Hurricanes are expected to take the Big East’s BCS spot, most likely the Orange Bowl.
West Virginia is one of two teams (Florida) listed in the Coaches Top 25 with four losses.
West Virginia moved three spots in the AP poll to No. 21. Gator Bowl opponent Maryland is No. 24.
