Women's Basketball: WVU Falls to SMS

ST. THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS -- Southwest Missouri State (1-0) snapped West Virginia University's 15-game non-conference win streak with a convincing 82-64 victory in the first game of the Paradise Jam women's basketball tournament at the University of the Virgin Islands.
WVU (2-1) shot a poor 39.7 percent (25-63) from the field compared to the Lady Bears 50.9 percent (27-53) in the loss. SMS also shot 90.5 percent (19-21) from the free throw line.
Senior guard Janell Dunlap scored a career-high 15 points on 6 of 7 shooting including 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Fellow senior Kate Bulger scored a team-high 16 points on 5 of 15 shooting, including 4 of 8 from three-point range. Junior Yolanda Paige dished out six assists and added 10 points while Sherell Sowho added 14 points on 6 of 15 shooting, with two three-pointers.
SMS's Kari Koch scored a game-high 29 points on 11 of 19 shooting, including 5 of 9 from three point range in the victory.
With 5:38 left in the game junior Yolanda Paige cut the SMS lead to nine on a 15-foot jumper but the Lady Bears used a 14-5 run to seal the win.
SMS led by as many as 19 twice in the game before the Mountaineers made their run, outscoring SMS 23-14 midway through the second quarter
SMS led at the half 42-25.
Next up for the Mountaineers in the tournament is a 2:30 matchup with Georgia Tech Friday.
