CHARLESTON, W.Va. — In response to recent floods that affected more than 1,700 families in West Virginia, the American Red Cross is teaming with West Virginia University and Marshall University to raise funds to help those in need.
American Red Cross workers will be collecting contributions for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund at both the Marshall University game on Friday (kickoff at 12:06 PM) and the West Virginia University game on Saturday (kickoff at 1 PM). All Red Cross workers will be wearing American Red Cross disaster relief vests and contributions will be accepted before, during and after each game.
According to Chris Dale, public affairs officer for the American Red Cross, this collaborative effort demonstrates each University’s commitment to the wellbeing of the state’s residents.
“Understanding that neither University normally allows external organizations to engage in these types of fundraising efforts, the American Red Cross is tremendously appreciative that each University has stepped forward to help. This is a true testament to the generosity of each school’s administration, a fine example of their dedication to the people of our state and a confirmation of the extraordinary circumstances of this disaster,” he said.
Dale adds that funds raised will go toward supporting the American Red Cross disaster relief fund and relief efforts across the state.
“This is a large disaster covering a tremendous area. Current damage assessment numbers show 21 counties affected by the most recent storms with more than 170 homes destroyed and close to 600 with major damage. In addition to our recent relief activities we are also continuing to provide assistance in response to floods that affected 550 homes in Kanawha and Lincoln Counties two weeks ago,” he said.
American Red Cross relief costs are expected to total more than $500,000. Funds to support American Red Cross relief activities come directly from the American Red Cross disaster relief fund. Without the disaster relief fund American Red Cross disaster services would not be possible.
While all donations will be accepted, the American Red Cross asks that individuals wishing to donate come to the game prepared with a check made payable to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund or make a cash contribution of a dollar or more. This will assist American Red Cross workers with accounting and depositing funds.
“We thank Marshall University and West Virginia University for their assistance in helping us help those in need. We are also appreciative of everyone who, as a result of this appeal, makes a contribution on game day,” Dale said.
All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary gifts of time and money from the American people. We urgently need your continued support to ensure that assistance is there as long as the need exists. Donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund provide a reliable funding base for disaster relief services that enable the American Red Cross to always be there, responding immediately to the needs of those affected by disasters everywhere, regardless of cost.
To help those suffering through this catastrophe, contributions can be made to the Disaster Relief Fund by calling 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions may also be sent to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013 or to your local American Red Cross chapter.
