Women's Basketball: WVU Downs East Carolina

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (November 23, 2003) – West Virginia University's women's basketball team (2-0) defeated East Carolina (1-0), 82-61, Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
Senior guard Sherell Sowho scored a game-high 26 points on 10-13 (.769) shooting including 4-7 (.571) from three point range. The Bristol, Va., native just missed her career high by one point. Her performance was also her ninth career 20-point scoring effort. She also tied a career-high with 10 field goals made.
Senior guard Kate Bulger added 17 points on 6-17 shooting including 4-8 from three point range. Junior point guard Yolanda Paige just missed a triple-double scoring 12 points with nine assists and eight rebounds. Junior Ramika McGee added six block shots.
Senior center Courtney Willis paced the Pirate attack with 14 points, including a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Junior guard Viola Cooper added 10.
West Virginia's defense held the Pirates to just 30.6 percent shooting from the field and just 25.0 percent from three-point distance. ECU was 0-15 from three-point land in the first half.
WVU led at the half 45-20 and the Mountaineers are now 1-2 all-time against the Pirates.
The Mountaineers return to action in the Paradise Jam on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Thursday, November 27, at 5:45 p.m. (EST).
