MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sherell Sowho scored 26 points to lead West Virginia to an easy 82-61 victory over East Carolina Sunday afternoon at the WVU Colsieum.
Sowho, a senior, made 10 of 13 field goal attempts including four of seven from three-point distance to come within one point of her career high of 27 she produced against Boston College on Jan. 29, 2002.
Sowho is coming off a 19-point effort in West Virginia’s season opener against Bucknell, a 77-57 Mountaineer victory.
Senior Kate Bulger added 17 and Yolanda Paige contributed 12 for the Mountaineers, now 2-0.
West Virginia made 30 of 59 field goal attempts including nine of 17 from three-point range.
East Carolina (0-1) had an awful time shooting the basketball, particularly in the first half. The Pirates finished the game hitting 19 of 62 field goal attempts for 30.6 percent.
ECU was just eight of 32 from three-point range for 25 percent.
Courtney Willis led East Carolina with 14 points. Viola Cooper added 10.
Bulger’s 17 points pushes her past the 1,300 mark for her career. The Pittsburgh native now shows 1,301 career points, good for 11th place on the WVU all-time list. Bulger needs 80 points to pass Judy Eaton for 10th spot with 1,380 points.
West Virginia faces Southwest Missouri State in the first round of the Paradise Jam Tournament in the Virgin Islands Thursday, Nov. 27. West Virginia will also play games against Georgia Tech and James Madison during the three-day tournament.
