“I think we did a good job of understanding our roles,” said West Virginia coach John Beilein. “We seemed confused when we opted out of our roles. We need to learn how to adjust on the fly.”
Kevin Pittsnogle and D’or Fischer contributed 16 each, while forward Tyrone Sally scored 12 points and added 7 rebounds.
Fischer led West Virginia with 10 rebounds and finished the game making 7 of 10 field goal attempts in 24 minutes of action.
“I know D’or was nervous at the beginning but once he played through it he did well,” said Beilein. “He made steps in understanding our rotation.”
West Virginia shot 49.3 percent but managed to convert just 5 of 25 three-point field goal attempts for 20 percent.
The Mountaineers led Northwest, which dressed just six players, 37-33 at halftime.
Guard Myron Sims paced the visitors with 32 points on 11 of 18 shooting. Dave Turcotte contributed 20 for the losers.
“When we have the big lineup in the game we have to do a better job with recognition of the shooter,” said Beilein.
West Virginia did manage to hold a 44-28 rebounding advantage, “We kept balls alive we haven’t done in the past,” said Beilein. “It’s good to be on that side of it.”
Saturday’s game was West Virginia’s final public tune up before opening the regular season on Monday, Nov. 24 at James Madison. WVU’s home opener is Saturday, Nov. 29 against Northeastern. That game will tipoff at 6 pm.
