MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The WVU volleyball team (6-20, 2-9) dropped a 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 30-20) match to No. 12 Notre Dame (22-3, 11-0), Saturday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers played well against the nationally-ranked Irish despite the outcome, leading by as many as five points three times during game two. But Notre Dame, undefeated in BIG EAST play, proved to be too much for WVU as they battled back in the second game and cruised to victory in game three to clinch the match.
West Virginia junior middle blocker Alison Zemanski had a stellar afternoon as she tallied a match-high 16 kills and committed just four errors in 27 attempts for a .444 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Stephanie Zolna notched a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs while fellow sophomore Kelly Mullins added nine kills and 10 digs.
Setter Brandice Studnicka amassed 40 assists, 12 digs and an ace for the Mountaineers.
For Notre Dame, Jessica Kinder paced her team defensively with 20 digs while her twin sister Kristen Kinder tallied 35 assists, eight digs, five kills and three blocks for a solid all-around match. Lauren Brewster had a team-high 12 kills and hit .579 for the Fighting Irish.
The Mountaineers wrap up the season on Sunday, Nov. 16, when they face BIG EAST foe Syracuse, at 1 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia seniors Jennifer Hayhurst, Dimitra Havriluk and Kristi King will be honored prior to the match.
