The West Virginia University women's cross country team cracked the Top 30 for the first time this season in FinishLynx's national cross country poll released Monday, Oct. 6, with a ranking of 26.
West Virginia, ranked 27th in Trackshark's preseason poll, went from not receiving any top 30 votes to nailing the 26th spot after finishing second at the Paul Short Classic hosted by Lehigh University on Saturday, Oct. 4, in Bethlehem, Pa. In that race, the Mountaineers fell to No. 8 Georgetown but defeated then No. 22 Tennessee, the top rated team in the south region.
Junior All-American Megan Metcalfe took top honors for the third consecutive match with a time of 20:38.12. The Mountaineers also saw significant contributions from juniors Tara Struyk (3), Jennifer Kemp (14), Jennifer Davis (16), Rachel Carden (25) and Devon Plesuk (42) and sophomore Susan Davis (78).
West Virginia will begin their quest to qualify for the NCAA Championships in two weeks when they travel to Northern Iowa to compete in pre-Nationals on Oct. 18.
