MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women's soccer team got back on track Sunday, Oct. 5, with a 2-0 road win over BIG EAST foe Georgetown.
Junior Laura Kane would start what would be a stellar day only two minutes in the game when her shot found its way around Hoya goalkeeper Erin Mazursky. However, a very close offsides call on the Mountaineers would wipe the goal out.
The call would not deter Kane as she would come calling again in the 16th minute. WVU received a free kick when senior midfielder Lisa Stoia was fouled, setting up a kick from 20 yards out. Kane took a spectacular shot on the free kick, bending it over the wall and past Mazursky to put the Mountaineers on top 1-0.
WVU dominated the first half of play, both offensively and defensively. The defense gave up only one shot while the Mountaineer offense fired 12.
20 minutes into the second half WVU would pull away from the Hoyas for good. Lisa Zanti sent a through ball down the left side to Marisa Kanela and Kanela knocked a one-touch cross to the middle of the goal mouth where Kane was waiting to head in her second goal of the day.
The Mountaineers continued their first half domination in the second, out-shooting Georgetown 21-5.
"We showed a lot of character today, the way we came out and took it to Georgetown," said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. "It's a great way to bounce back from a loss at Notre Dame."
Kane's goals marked her fourth and fifth of the season. The pair moves her into second place on the team in goals.
WVU returns home on Friday, Oct. 10, when they host Rutgers. Kickoff against the Scarlet Knights is set for 7 p.m.
