Women's Cross Country: WVU 2nd at Lehigh

The West Virginia University women’s cross country team placed second out of 32 teams at the Paul Short Classic at Lehigh University on Saturday, Oct. 4, in Bethlehem, Pa.
West Virginia finished with a total of 59 points after placing five of its seven runners in the individual top 25. Georgetown took the overall title with a total of 28 points while WVU (59), Tennessee (80), James Madison (193) and Villanova (230) rounded out the top five.
The Mountaineers were once again paced by All-American Megan Metcalfe who finished first out of 224 runners to win her third individual title in as many meets. The Edmonton, Alberta, native, crossed the line with a time of 20:38.12.
Junior Tara Struyk finished third overall with a time of 20:44.70 to garner her second top three finish of the season. Jennifer Kemp (21:35.32) took fourteenth, Jennifer Davis (21:36.69) finished sixteenth and Rachel Carden (21:48.66) crossed the line at twenty-fifth. Rounding out West Virginia’s effort was Devon Plesuk (22:11.57) at forty-second and Susan Davis (22:42.20) at seventy-eighth.
Every match the Mountaineers compete in from this point forward holds major post season implications. WVU will now prepare for a string of matches that includes Pre-Nationals, BIG EAST Championships, Mid-Atlantic Regionals, NCAA Championships and USA Cross Country Nationals.
West Virginia will begin their quest to qualify for the NCAA Championships in two weeks when they travel to Northern Iowa University to compete in Pre-Nationals on Oct. 18.
