The Georgetown men and Notre Dame women each took home the conference crowns at the 2003 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships held today at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
In the men’s 8,000-meter race, Georgetown was paced by junior Rod Koborsi who posted a second-place time of 24:38 to improve on his 14th-place showing last year. Six Hoya runners placed in the top 15, including sophomore Chris Lukezic who was third (24:42) and sophomore Fleet Hower who finished fifth (24:45). This marks Georgetown’s league-best 13th championship title, including four of the last six.
The top men’s finisher was Villanova graduate student Jonathan Fasulo who crossed the finish line in 24:35. He is the first Wildcat winner since Louie Quintana in 1993. Fasulo and two additional top 15 finishers helped give VU a third-place showing.
Notre Dame placed two runners in the top 10 as the Irish finished second.
BIG EAST Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to Georgetown led by head coach Ron Helmer.
For the Notre Dame women, this marks their second consecutive BIG EAST title. The Irish were paced by three runners in the top 15. Sophomore Molly Huddle was ND’s top finisher, taking third place (20:47). Kerry Meagher, a junior, placed sixth (21:01). Providence had the top two finishers for a second-place team showing. Friar junior Kim Smith took top honors by completing the 6,000-meter race in 20:01. That time breaks the BIG EAST’s 6,000-meter Van Cortlandt record of 20:04 set by Catherine Guiney of Boston College in 2001. Prior to 2001, the women’s event was 5,000 meters.
