The West Virginia University men's soccer team was defeated by the Northeastern Huskies 2-1 on Friday, Oct. 3.
Northeastern jumped on the Mountaineers early as freshman Daniel Ivec took a ball sent to him off of a direct kick from Atha Kirkopoulos and drilled it past goalkeeper Adam Shutler only 5:57 into the match.
The Huskies would extend their lead shortly before the half as junior Michael Cipriano gathered a pass from teammate Andrew Hickey in the 42nd minute and put a low shot in the back of the net.
The Mountaineers would double their shot output of the first half (4) in an attempt to knot the match up, but to no avail. The only offense that WVU could muster would come off a penalty kick in the 70th minute in which junior Aaron Pitchkolan netted his attempt.
Shutler was only able to make one save on the evening, while Huskies goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio tallied six saves in the win.
The loss drops the Mountaineers to 4-5-1 and bumps up to Northeastern 4-4-2 overall.
WVU hits the field again on Sunday, Oct. 5, when they face Boston College on the road at Newton Campus Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
