The West Virginia University women's cross country team cracked the Top 25 for the first time this season in FinishLynx's national cross country poll released Monday, Oct. 20, with a ranking of 25.
West Virginia, ranked 27th in Trackshark's preseason poll, moved up from No. 27 to No. 25 this week after finishing ninth in the gold division at Pre Nationals hosted by Northern Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Waterloo, IA. In that race, the Mountaineers defeated then No. 13 Villanova, No. 14 Baylor, No. 24 William and Mary, No. 29 Florida State and No. 30 Toledo. WVU also topped No. 23 UC Santa Barbara, No. 25 Nebraska, No. 27 Boston College and No. 29 Duke.
Junior All-American Megan Metcalfe finished fourth overall out of 222 competitors with a time of 20:10.6. The Mountaineers also saw significant contributions from juniors Tara Struyk (39), Jennifer Davis (83), Jennifer Kemp (87), Devon Plesuk (93), Rachel Carden (136) and sophomore Susan Davis (192).
West Virginia continues their quest to qualify for the NCAA Championships in less than two weeks when they travel to Van Courtlandt Park, N.Y., to compete in the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 31.
