MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team (4-8-2) will try to get back on the winning track Tuesday when they host rival Pitt (5-9-0) at 7 p.m. at the Mountaineer Soccer Complex.
WVU will have to shake off a pair of losses from last week to top 25 teams Virginia and Seton Hall. WVU owned a 1-0 lead in the 80th minute against the No. 25 Cavaliers but two late goals by UVA, one with less than five minutes remaining, ended the Mountaineers upset hopes.
Against the No. 18 Pirates WVU fell behind 3-0 before storming back on two goals from freshman Jarrod Smith to bring the game within striking distance. However, two more goals by Seton Hall left the Mountaineers with a 5-2 loss.
The Panthers are coming off of a 1-0 loss on the road to Providence. Before the loss to the Friars, Pitt put together their only two-game winning streak of the season by beating Georgetown, 2-1, and Bucknell, 3-2. The Mountaineer defense will have to try to contain reigning BIG EAST offensive player of the week Keeyan Young. The sophomore has recorded six goals on the season and one assist.
Smith will be an integral part of WVU's offensive charge after scoring two goals against Seton Hall. The freshman from Havelock, New Zealand, has netted five goals on the season, leading the team in that category.
The Mountaineers are 28-9-2 all-time against the Panthers.
