The West Virginia University women's tennis team is set to host the first annual West Virginia Alumni Weekend Tennis Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
Mountaineers of young and old are joining together this weekend to commemorate the great accomplishments of the WVU women's tennis team since it opened in 1973. Ten famed alumni are making their return to Morgantown to reflect on past memories and compete against one another in Saturday's round robin tournament.
The alumni participating in this weekend's tournament, all of whom own a place in the WVU record book, are Sarah Bible (1987-91), B'Ann "True" Gabelt (1973-75), Maureen "Druga" Destefano (1980-84), Katherine Gillis (1982-86), Lisa "Grimes" Johnston (1980-84), Carrie "Gilson" Bastin (1980-84), Marianne "Rice" Simonton (1975-78), Gail "Olberholtzer" Sutton (1973-75), Christina "Walker" Duffin (1994-98) and Jodi Firestone (1995-99).
This weekend's festivities will begin with a dinner at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, at the Pinnacle Club in Hotel Morgan. Saturday's events include a round robin tournament running from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
